As mentioned in the “Marathon Man” Case #345, I like imaging — both invasive and non-invasive — for accurate CAD risk assessment. But no test is perfect, including the Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) scan, which provides us with the CAC score (CACS).

Case #345: Extreme Exercise and Cardiac Risk

“Duane,” age 31, came to us in April 2010 for an evaluation and treatment after receiving an EBCT CACS of 217; this score places him in the 99th percentile (very high CHD risk) of men his age. Relative CACS percentiles for age and gender are now well defined from EBCT results.
